First introduced in 2007, Windows Home Server introduced a unique client backup system that allowed an image based backup of up to 10 client PCs in a cost effective, set-it-and-forget-it configuration. Originally aimed at the consumer market, Home Server was quickly adopted by SMB IT consultants who recognized the value of such an appliance to backup and restore key PCs in a small business.

Last year, Microsoft released Windows Home Server 2011, along with 2 other business-focused products that utilize that same client backup technology. But while Home Server is limited to 10 PCs, Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials and Small Business Server 2011 Essentials will backup 25 PCs in a domain environment.

We’ll look at the differences between the 3 products and the reasons you might choose one over the other.

Of course, a backup is only useful if you can RESTORE it. We’ll demonstrate how easy it is to restore a file, a PC or even the server itself.

If you don’t have or want one of these devices on your network, the built-in backup capability in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is much more robust and full featured than those included with past operating systems.  This is not your Daddy’s NTBackup! We’ll look at these built-in utilities and how you can use them.
